Germany, Italy, Canada, Spain, Netherlands, Norway, Belgium, Denmark, Portugal, Luxembourg, Latvia, Lithuania, Romania--these are all the NATO countries that have not met their financial obligations under the alliance. Germany, the biggest, most powerful economy in Europe, spends a mere 1.2% of its GDP on defense (the US does 3.6%). NATO requires a minimum of 2%. For the most powerful country in Europe to shirk its financial obligations in this way is inexcusable. Why should the United States pay more for the defense of Europe than the Europeans themselves? On this point, President Trump has been absolutely correct.
